Csaroda Reformed Church

  • Csaroda Reformed Church, the church of Smiling Saints

The late-Romanesque church, emereged from the flood-basin of Csaroda stream, is one of the most famous medieval churches of the Carpathian Basin. Its construction can be made to the end of 13h century or to the beginning of the 14th. The medieval church of Csaroda is very famous about his wonderful atmosphered frescoes. On the north side of the nave, 13th century-made pictures of Byzantine style Saints were painted, which are nice, friendly and smiling. They are called the Smiling Saints by the vernacular.

After the middle of the 16th century, the church became a Reformed church: the medieval murals were covered by whiting. In their place, popular in nature, floral motifs were made, that remain in the exterior façade as well. The painted wooden ceiling was prepared in 1777, with a similar aged Baroque citations painted rustic wood pulpit, the chancel and the benches.
