Márokpapi Reformed Church, the jewel box of Bereg
The village’s church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, was already mentioned in the beginning of 14th century and it was owned by the reformed from the second half of the 16th century. The church was reached by a thunderbolt and burnt down in 1939. At that time, the idea of demolition of the building arose - but fortunately it never happened - and after a research (started in 2000) and a finished recovery, a gorgeous medieval church opened for the congregation and visitors. In front of the western external façade, a 15m high campanile stands which was built in the 18th century and was renovated in the 2nd half of the 19th century. The exterior façade’s special ornament is the colorful floral painting from the 17th century, thus, already from the Reformed time. Similar images of these ornaments also occur in the area in several places, so in Csaroda, in Lónya or in Vámosatya.
