Szamosújlak Reformed Church

  • Szamosújlak Europa Nostra Award winner church

The early Gothic style church stands behind the embankment of the Szamos, on the edge of the village. The church is almost entirely preserved his medieval form. At the beginning of the 1990s, the early Gothic Reformed Church of Szamosújlak condition was so unworthy, that was not similar at all to its original form. The steep roof probably destroyed in the 1865 fire, the gothic window of the sanctuary was walled and the walls completely missed the plaster. The church was restored between 1992 and 1996 by the help of the National Monument Protection Office. During the excavation and the wall research, lot of data managed to be collected. The problem, however, arose as there was no authentic document available regarding the original roof structure. Therefore, based on the Hungarian churches, the remaining Hungarian roof structures were used a sample to establish the same elements of the original roof structure, consisting of truss-girder – which is a very special spectacle.

The high level of professional restoration recognized with Europa Nostra Prize which called the attention to the monument protection of the area and the county.
