Tarpa Reformed Church, Church of St. György, the Dragon Slayer
The Tarpa Reformed Church is the biggest one of Bereg, simply stands out in size compared to the other medieval churches. One of the gems of the church is the south gate. Its special attractions are the medieval frescoes created in the beginning of the 15th century. The first and largest image represents the fight of St. György with the dragon, which occupies a significant place in the history of Hungarian art memory materials. The distinguished respected St. György in Hungary – knowing as the embodiment of the knightly virtues – had a much larger significance than the average in Tarpa, because the church building Bathory family’s ancestor, according to legend, killed the dragon of swamp Ecsed. Soon after that, the badge of Order of the Dragon, founded by King Zsigmond, appeared. The congregation converted to the Reformed faith in the 16th mid-century.
In 1795, in the width of the medieval nave, a huge church hall was built; and to which, a 45.5m high tower was raised from the East.
